About the event
The Congresses, held every 2-3 years since 1993, are an important forum for scientists, industry, regulators and NGOs from across the globe to gather and discuss the latest thinking and activity around the development and uptake of non-animal methods and approaches, implementation of the 3Rs, and a range of other topics relevant to the use of animals in research, testing and education. Over 700 participants from more than 40 different countries attended this latest event, held in the southern hemisphere for the first time.
Summary
We convened and co-chaired a session ‘One world, many standards: international perspectives on regulating the use of animals in science’. Speakers from Latin America, North Africa, Asia and Europe gave their expert perspectives on the current challenges, gaps and opportunities around ensuring appropriate oversight of animal use in science.
We also gave an invited presentation as part of the session ‘Working together to end ‘severe’ suffering’. During this talk, entitled ‘Practical approaches for reducing and avoiding severe suffering’, we shared information and updates about our Focus on Severe Suffering initiative and highlighted the Roadmap to reducing severe suffering.
