What we do

Animals used in research and testing can, and do, experience pain, suffering, distress and lasting harm. That is why replacing animal experiments with humane alternatives is the RSPCA’s principal goal. Because non-animal methods have not yet been developed in many research areas, we promote reductions in animal numbers and suffering, and better welfare, for as long as animal use continues.

Our goals

  • 1 Develop and disseminate practical tools and resources to increase understanding of animals’ experiences and enable further refinements.
  • 2 Connect individuals involved in the care and use of laboratory animals to share good practice around identifying and reducing, or ideally, avoiding severe suffering.
  • 3 Focus on specific experimental procedures and research areas that cause severe suffering and identify practical refinements.
