    About the event

We were delighted to accept an invitation from the organisers of this event (which attracted over 2,000 delegates from across the world) to run three scientific sessions.

    Summary

As part of the first session, ‘Ending severe suffering - Where are we now?’, we first presented the current scale of the challenge and progress made so far. This was followed by talks from speakers from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies on severe suffering, severity classification, and the scientific need to avoid uncontrolled and unalleviated suffering.

The second session, ‘Welfare assessment - Recognising severe suffering’ included presentations on the use of welfare assessment as a tool to avoid severe suffering in mice, fish, and rat models.

Finally, the third session, titled ‘Practical refinements of ‘severe’ suffering animal models and procedures’ included presentations on the marginal gains concept, avoiding mortality in animal research and testing, and examples of how severe procedures have been refined in different disease models.
